How the Lack of Diversity in Town Governance Affects Public Policy

BRJE member and Town Meeting Member Raul Fernandez┬ápresents a critical analysis of the impact of innocuous-appearing and well-intentioned Warrant Article language on drivers of color in Brookline. Raul’s analysis is that lack of consideration of the language changes proposed by the Warrant Articles increase the opportunities for implicit bias and overt forms of discrimination in policing practices to “rear their ugly heads” by creating a patchwork of zones with different speed limits. Raul concludes that the lack of diversity in town governance creates blind spots that prevent the consideration of varying perspectives during decision-making.

Raul’s analysis begins at 28:24.
